After completing a cadetship on a local newspaper in Queensland, I realised I preferred feature writing over news and decided to pursue a career in magazines in Sydney. I've since worked on everything from Take 5 and DOLLY to marie claire and now Cosmo. The work is varied and interesting, the perks can be very nice and the people are a lovely bunch (and nothing like the nasty "mag girl" stereotype). As deputy editor, I edit copy, commission freelancers and write the odd story.

Fun, Fearless Friday

The women who inspire us all...

I was lucky enough recently to interview two amazing women who have inspired the nation – albeit in really different ways. While speaking to Julia Gillard, Australia’s first female Deputy Prime Minister (look for that story in an upcoming issue) I couldn’t help thinking why it took Australia so long to elect a woman as our DPM. But then, it probably means we are not far off from getting a female PM. How incredible would that be?

Then, I met the courageous and beautiful Lauren Huxley, 21. Lauren survived a vicious attack in her home, but that’s not why she’s so special. Her graciousness, sense of humour and gorgeous nature have made her someone to look up to and admire.

Who do you admire? Maybe it’s your mum, a friend or someone famous. Not sure? Have a think – and let us know. You could win two tickets to the fabulous Cosmopolitan Fun, Fearless Female Women of the Year Awards party on September 16 just by voting online for your favourites and then telling us who you look up to.

Who do I admire? The 30 talented, creative, strong and fabulous Australian women who are finalists in this year’s awards. They range from the exuberant Triple M radio host Fifi Box and down-to-earth TV presenter Jen Hawkins to Lauren and Julia – among plenty more amazing women.

How will we pick a winner from this talented bunch? We won’t – that’s your job! All you have to do is pick up the latest Cosmo (onsale Monday, July 7), go online and vote for one finalist in each of the nine categories.

Not only might you get to attend our awards nights – you also get the satisfaction of helping your favourite fun, fearless female win one of the awards. So, get voting…!

New York, New York

Have you ever been to New York City? I’ve just returned. I mean, literally just stepped off the plane and, yes, my hair looks like crap after … oh 18 or 19 hours flying time. But what a trip! What a city! What a hoot! Let me explain … I was in New York on official Cosmo business, a fact finding mission where I was privy to a whiff of two divine new fragrances that I’ll tell you all about in the mag very soon! Let me just say this – there’s one for him (the sexy 91X RocaWear) and one for you (the mischievous and delicious new scent, Juicy Couture!)… so just keep your Christmas list (and Christmas shopping list!) in pencil for a little while yet. When working for Cosmo, however, luckily business often meets pleasure and so I also had the opportunity to play tourist, eat at some amazing restaurants, absorb the electric atmosphere of the US Presidential Elections, make new friends, catch up with old friends and shop in Zara like a woman possessed. Here are some of the highlights:
