First it was YouTube. The came Facebook. Now, the cybertrend du jour is Twitter, baby. And if you're not on it, there's only one question: why not?
What the tweet?
If you're not sure what Twitter actually is, don't panic: you're not alone. Here's a quick primer:
- Twitter is a microblogging site. Traditional blog posts are quite long, but on Twitter, posts are limited to 140 characters. - You might think that 140 characters isn't much, but there are lots of abbreviations to help edit your work. Try "RT" (to repeat someone's tweet), "kthxbai" ("OK, thanks, goodbye") and "DM" ("direct message"). - If you want to post a web link, convert it to a tinyURL. Convert here: http://www.tiny.cc/.
Why the tweet?
Twitter, some say, is the final word in narcissism. But it's also a great way to perve on the inner workings of celebrities, so we're happy to take the self-centred tag.

Plus, in a far less vapid way, it's also an instant news service - almost like a wire. When the Mumbai terrorist attacks occurred last year, savvy tweeters messaged followers to notify them of their whereabouts. Twitter was also used during the Virginia Tech shootings last year, and Barack Obama famously used the medium to track his presidential campaign.
