Eleni Vardas

Eleni Vardas has jumped on the wedding-planning bandwagon after her partner of three years, Nick, proposed to her on Melbourne Cup Day last year. For Eleni, it’s a crazy journey that is proving to be hilarious, nerve-racking and everything but smooth…

On hiatus

I have come to realise that Monopoly is quite possibly the best game ever. Or maybe I simply have too much time on my hands? Either way, these last couple of weeks have been quite slow given recent events I mentioned in my last blog post, but at the same time, it has been a much-needed time for reflection which is always hard to come by. When I say reflection, I don’t mean clichéd “what-am-I-doing-with-my-life” ramblings, I’m just thinking about things to come in the future, the elephant in the room being my wedding. I’ve had the disapproving “you’re too young to be getting married” speeches thrown at me by people who clearly will never ever be getting married, but it doesn’t discourage me. I know what I’m doing. And I’ve never wanted anything so much in my life.

Amidst all this “me” time I seem to be having, I’ve been thinking about the ways I have changed as a person throughout my relationship with Captain Awesome (fiancé) that began one fateful night three years ago after bumping into him as I left a café. We were mutual friends at the time, so when he came running after me to get my number as I returned to my car, it must have been his out-of breath charm that made me succumb. While he insists that he did no running of the sort and that it was purely a coincidence that we had both parked our car in the same car park (his was actually down the street), there was something in the air besides some seriously pungent chemicals leaking out of a broken pipe. It’s common knowledge that a person will slowly “adapt” to their surroundings after a period of time and I’ve done just that. For example, I went from having no interest in superheros of any sort, to becoming an avid fan of TV series Smallville, naming all the superheros in the Justice League off by heart, and finding myself Google-ing superhero movies yet to be released all thanks to fiancé. I’m not complaining, that’s what couples do I guess. They grow together and take on their partner’s interests. It’s all part of this magical concept called “compromise”.

And while my engagement continues to remain on hiatus, I’ve safely tucked away the gorgeous Rachel Gilbert dress I was planning on wearing, but with a few upcoming black tie events, I’m pretty sure I can put it to good use.
