Survival of the thinnest

The great weight debate has been fuelled even further recently by 21-year-old Canadian model Coca Rocha speaking out, saying that she is no longer in high demand because of her size. With a resume boasting big names like Marc Jacobs, Prada, Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Louis Vuitton, one has to wonder how much weight Coco has put on to be losing such high profile bookings. Here’s the shocker - she’s a size four - which is an Australian size eight.

"You know what, I've stopped caring," Coco said in an interview with The New York Times. "If I want a hamburger, I'm going to have one."

Others however, have been less confident with the ever-growing “fat attacks.” Our very own Gemma Ward was recently slammed by the media for putting on weight, and designer Karl Lagerfeld branded Heidi Klum too “heavy for the catwalk” not all that long ago.

The seemingly endless debate has sparked controversy and both designers and models are weighing in on the matter. In 2006 models were turned away from Madrid and Milan Fall Fashion Week if they didn’t have a healthy BMI - so why are girls like Coco Rocha now being shunned from the runway, and what does this mean for aspiring models?

That's ridiculous - women thinner than an eight don't even look normal! Go Coco - don't let it get you down. I know I'll never get on the catwalk but I'm healthy and happy with my weight - and I've only ever had two people call me fat - one in high school as a very unfunny joke and one from a man who belonged in prison. As long as you are healthy and happy that's what counts - and I'd rather see curves than bones any day.

What the fashion industry neglets to tell people is that anything less than a size 8 [AU] is an unnatural and unhealthy size. For years I starved myself down to a size zero and I am now only coming to terms with my natural size 8 shape. If What message are we sending out to impressionable girls? We are forcing these unrealistic images of sick women onto them and telling them that this is "beautiful". Bones aren't beautiful, intellect, humor and happiness are.
