To fringe or not to fringe? It’s a question you’ve likely asked yourself at one point or another—be it after a break up, resignation, trip abroad, or seeing literally any photo ever of Sabrina Carpenter.
But cutting bangs is a big decision. A fringe has the power to change your look and, depending on your hair type and the cut you go for, can require some serious maintenance.
There are a few things to consider before going for the chop, including what style might best suit your face shape and what your maintenance routine might look like.
As Mariah Rota, Founder and Director of Cole Hair Studio tells Cosmopolitan Australia: “A fringe can completely transform your look, but the key is choosing one that complements your features and lifestyle. Before making the cut, consult with a trusted stylist who can tailor the perfect fringe for you. After all, the best fringes don’t just look great—they work for you!”
Scroll on for Mariah’s guide to what to consider before you cut bangs.

what to consider before you get bangs...
1. What's your hair texture?
“Not all fringes work with all hair types,” Mariah says. “If your hair is naturally thick, wavy, or curly, you may need extra styling time to keep your fringe in check. On the flip side, fine hair may struggle to hold a full, blunt fringe without looking sparse. A professional stylist can guide you on the best fringe for your natural texture.”
2. How often do you need to tie your hair up?
“If you live in a ponytail or a messy bun, a fringe can add softness and style—but it also needs to blend well when tied back. Curtain bangs or wispy fringes work great for those who still want a polished look when their hair is up,” advises Mariah.

3. Do you want solid or wispy?
“A bold, blunt fringe makes a statement, but it also requires commitment. If you prefer something more low-maintenance, a wispy or feathered fringe grows out more seamlessly and offers a softer look,” Mariah says.
4. How much maintenance can you handle?
“Are you a wash-and-go type or someone who styles their hair daily? If you’re not up for regular trims and styling, a micro fringe or a heavy, blunt bang may not be for you. Opting for a longer, layered fringe allows for easier upkeep,” Mariah explains.

5. What's your face shape?
Fringes can enhance your features when done right.
Mariah shares a break down of what style of fringe best suits each face shape:
- “Oval face: Lucky you! Almost any fringe style works.
- Round face: Long, side-swept bangs create an elongating effect.
- Square face: Soft, wispy fringes help balance strong jawlines.
- Heart-shaped face: Curtain bangs or side bangs soften a wider forehead.”
6. What's the weight of the bang?
“A heavy, thick fringe can add structure and drama, while a lightweight, feathered fringe is breezier and easier to manage,” says Mariah. “Choosing the right weight depends on your hair density and personal style preference.”
7. Can you commit to growing it out?
“Fringes don’t last forever, but the grow-out phase can feel like it does. If you don’t want the awkward in-between stage, consider longer, face-framing layers that grow out more seamlessly,” advises Mariah.

8. Do you like hair on your face?
“This may sound simple, but it’s important. If you’re constantly tucking your hair behind your ears or pushing it back, a heavy fringe might drive you crazy. A softer, side-swept fringe or long curtain bangs might be a better fit,” says Mariah.
9. Is a 'lifestyle fringe' right for you?
“A fringe should work with your day-to-day life,” says Mariah. “If you sweat a lot at the gym, live in a humid climate, or prefer a low-maintenance routine, a high-maintenance full fringe might not be the best choice. Instead, opt for a versatile, longer fringe that can be styled in multiple ways.”
