Reece Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe and Selma Blair; Cruel Intentions may have been released at the tail-end of the decade, but the 1999 movie cemented its stars some of the ’90s most remembered, with each going on to have glittering careers through the 2000s and beyond.

Naturally, when a reboot was announced—along with a new crop of young talent at its helm—we all took notice.

Prime Video is reimagining the classic film for the modern day, with the streamer’s interpretation including plenty of “bittersweet” call backs to the original, and a handful of new characters to boot. Across eight episodes, it will tell a tantalising new story—with the familiar bells and whistles (aka a step sibling relationship) of the OG flick.

Scroll on for everything you need to know, including when and where you can watch it.

What Is the Cruel Intentions Reboot About?

Amazon Prime’s Cruel Intentions reboot is set in college, and follows an indecent wager between step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Valmont. Aside from being rich AF and freakishly obsessed with each other, Caroline and Lucien’s personalities centre around them ruling the Greek system—aka Sororities and Fraternities, for non-US readers—at their university in DC.

However, when a hazing incident goes wrong and jeopardises their character, Caroline gets Lucien on board to help convince the US Vice President’s daughter,  Annie, to pledge her sorority.

According to a recently-released trailer, the gist is; if Lucien can get Annie on board, then Lucian can have Caroline (sound familiar?). However, a few things are bound to go wrong along the way. What? Well, you’ll just have to watch to find out.

The film was loosly based on a novel by a novel by Choderlos de Laclos titled Liaisons Dangereuses, which the reboot will be, too. While the OG plot (incest aside) is flawless, we have faith this one will be just as juicy. After all, Euphoria producer Phoebe Fisher Gossip Girl writer Sara Goodman are involved!

Cruel Intentions Cast

The cast of the Cruel Intentions reboot includes a familiar face for Aussie viewers. Bellingen-born Zac Burgess, who played the older version of Eli Bell in Netflix’s hit Boy Swallows Universe adaptation, has been tapped to play Lucien.

His step-sister, Caroline is played by Sarah Catherine Hook, alongside Savannah Lee Smith as Annie.

Of the film, Zac recently told Cosmopolitan US: “I’m excited for Cruel Intentions to hit Prime Video because it’s going to give audiences a wild, voyeuristic peek into a world where there are no rules. Everything is up for grabs. This show takes the bold, seductive energy of the original Cruel Intentions and breathes new life into it, set in this darkly glamorous ‘timeless present.’” Sounds like a vibe.
