It hasn’t been long since the highly-anticipated Wicked film landed in theatres but we’re already keen to return to Oz.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until late 2025 for the next part of Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the broadway hit to drop. Naturally, we have *so* many questions about the project’s second instalment. While many could be answered in plot-point-explaining, #SpoilerAlert-toting TikToks, there is one big question that is still to be answered: Who will play Dorothy in Wicked Part 2?
Yes—for the uninitiated—Dorothy is, in fact, a character in the Broadway production of Wicked, as the events of the second act occur concurrently to the story of The Wizard of Oz.
But that doesn’t mean she won’t be personified on-screen. In fact, the director has confirmed that Dorothy will be included in Wicked Part 2—and how. Scroll on for everything we know so far, including an explainer of the overlapping timelines *and* who may have been cast as the famous character.
Wait, How Do the Wicked & Wizard of Oz Timelines Overlap?
The first part of Wicked is set during Glinda and Elphaba’s school years at Shiz University.
Part 2 takes place around 10 years after the end of the first instalment, and leads up to the moment where Dorothy enters Oz for the first time in The Wizard of Oz. It gives context to the events of the OG story, including the Wizard’s motivations and how Elphaba’s sister, Nessa Rose became the Wicked Witch of the East (and ended up under Dorothy’s house).
It also sees a reunion between Elphaba and Glinda at the house where Nessa was killed/Dorothy entered Oz, and we see the origins of Dorothy’s adventure from the perspective of the two witches.
The final scenes of Wicked and The Wizard Of Oz are set at the same time.
Will Dorothy Appear In Wicked Part 2?
While Dorothy is spoken about but not seen in the stage show, there are theories she may take on physical form in the film adaptation.
In an interview with Variety, Chu teased: “In the show, Dorothy is around. They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much. I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two. There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want.”
He added, “And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to Part Two.”
Sooo that means? It’s still unclear. However, despite the ambiguity, some Wicked fans have taken to TikTok to start theorising about who could play Dorothy, if she is to be features on-screen. And we have to admit, some of the ideas are pretty convincing.
Who Will Play Dorothy In Wicked Part 2?
Dorothy is an undeniably iconic character. So, if she *is* to feature in Wicked Part 2, it would be a significant role for any young actress.
At the time of writing, noone is credited as playing Dorothy in Wicked’s credits—but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating.
One consistent rumour across both X and TikTok is that Alisha Weir, who starred in Matilda: The Musical, has landed the part. The 15-year-old attended the London premiere of Wicked wearing a pair of metallic silver flats, which looked similar to a pair of glittering slippers a (notably faceless) Dorothy is wearing in an early teaser trailer for the film.
Easter Egg or coincidence? We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure.
