If you’re also a part of the single ladies community (proud and present), don’t fret that you won’t be grabbing a significant other for a smooch this NYE. Rather, join us and cram a dozen grapes into your gob to grant all of your hopes and dreams in 2025. It’s just science, obvi.

Why Are People Eating 12 Grapes at Midnight On New Year's Eve?

Originating in Spain and spreading to parts of South America, the tradition of consuming 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight is understood to be a way of welcoming blessings, good fortune and prosperity into your life throughout the new year

The tradition is known as “Las doce uvas de la suerte,” or “The twelve grapes of luck,” and this originates from the belief that each of the 12 grapes represents a month of the new year.

Why Is the Tradition Popular On TikTok?

Between references to the tradition made by iconic TV  characters like Modern Family’s Gloria Pritchett (queen), and viral TikTok creators sharing their successful experiences participating in the trend, it’s really no surprise that Millennials and Gen Zs are getting clued in about the trend.

I mean, it’s a pretty enticing concept that success is imminent if you annihilate a dozen juicy grapes at 12 am in the morning… can you really blame us?

How to Participate In the Tradition *Correctly*

It is believed that you must eat the twelve grapes commencing at the first stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve as soon as one year progresses into the next.

Sounds simple enough, right? But here’s the catch. You have to down all 12 grapes in the first 12 seconds of the new year—and making 12 timely wishes with a mouth full of fruit isn’t for the weak, so speed will be your best friend here.

Thankfully, it isn’t a requirement to vocalise your wishes at the exact moment, but hey, bonus points if manage to speak them into existence too!

Happy New Year (and grape-eating)!
