C’est officiel!— Emily In Paris will be returning for a fifth season, and all signs suggest that this new chapter will entail a saucy Italian twist.
It has been less than a week since season 4 part 2 of Emily in Paris premiered, and Netflix is already gearing up to give us more stories about Emily’s tumultuous life abroad, juggling her work, friends and romances.
On September 16, Lily Collins, who plays Emily, announced that the show had been renewed for season 5 on during an appearance on Good Morning America. Nextflix served us this info via an Instagram video where Lily can be seen sipping an espresso as she remarks, “There’s no place like Rome,” lifting he cup to reveal a “5” on its base. The caption on the post reads “It’s official: EMILY IN PARIS is coming back for season 5!”
Darren Star, the creator and showrunner of Emily in Paris shared on Nexflix’s Tudum, “We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and are excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!” he said. “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.”
Emily’s journey leading her to Italy is a result of Star’s creative decision to “stay ahead of the audience,” and venture the cast to “unexpected places.”
What Has the Cast Said About Emily In Paris Season 5
Lily also spoke to Tudum regarding how Emily’s romantic relationships are steering her character’s narrative. She shared, “Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance.”
“We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacation mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”
“I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection,” the actress added. “A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season.”
Frenchman Lucas Bravo, who portrays Emily’s love interest in the show, Gabriel, has noted that he wants them to end up back together. “I hope for my sake that they get together because it’s way more fun to shoot lovely scenes and cheeky scenes and fun scenes than just being desperate and melancholic for five months,” he told People.
As for Ashley Park, who plays Mindy, Emily’s ride-or-die bestie, she hopes that Emily finds happiness and ends up “with the person who makes her feel comfortable.” She told People, “I think my biggest question for Emily right now is, ‘Where is she going to end up?’ Before it was America or France? Now it’s France or Italy. And so, I’m happy if at least her and Mindy stay friends.”
At the premiere of the second part of season 4 on September 10, Emily’s new Italian love interest, Marcello, played by Eugenio Franceschini, revealed that despite his main focus being his performance—“I hope my work is up to the series’ [standards]”—he has found himself indulging in potential ideas for his characters’ next moves.
“There are so many ways it can go but sure, there are some ideas,” he revealed. “It’s really a fun story to keep telling.”
When the series dropped Season 4 in August, It had 19.9M views in its first four days and swiftly found itself at #1on Netflix, where it has remained in the top 10 for four consecutive weeks in 93 countries, according to Tudum.
Netflix hasn’t yet confirmed any filming dates or predicted a timeline for when season 5 will air—so until then, we will just have to sit back and watch the American expat fend for herself in the French Alps, whilst we fantasise about what’s to come for Emily.
