Rebecca Yarros’ Onyx Storm was only released a month ago but if you’re anything like us, you’re probably already hanging out for the next book in her Empyrean series. Seriously—we have so. many. questions. that need answering, and book four truly could not come soon enough.
We’ll give you the good news first: A follow-up to Onyx Storm has, in fact, been confirmed. The bad news: We might have to wait a little while for it…
But not to worry—that will just give us plenty of time to re-read the series so far (and potentially even binge the Empyrean-inspired TV series that’s currently in the works—but more on that here).

When Is the Next Empyrean Book Coming Out?
The Empyrean series is set to be comprised of five books, the author told Variety in 2023. Yarros has already released Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and most recently, Onyx Storm.
While the first three books in the series were released within less than two years of each other—Fourth Wing came out in April 2023, Iron Flame in October 2023, and Onyx Storm in January 2025—it might take a bit longer for fans to get ahold of the next novel.
In January 2025, Yarros said she wouldn’t commit to a firm release date for the fourth book, explaining that she wants to write a new contemporary story first. She added she wants to spend time with her family and rest before she gets stuck into writing the romantasy story again, too.
Accordingly, it might be a few years until the next book in the series arrives.
What Is the Empyrean Series About?
The romantasy book series begins at Basgiath War College, an elite school where students train in one of four military sectors: dragon rider, healer, infantry or scribe.
The series follows Violet Sorrengail, a scribe in training, facing her mother’s pressure to become a dragon rider instead. Her only hope for leaving the college by graduating, and amongst the chaos, Xaden Riorson (her mother’s sworn enemy) is determined to have her killed—or so we’re led to think.
Iron Flame, journeys with Violet through her second year as she faces troubling encounters with magical forces, hidden family lore and lies that completely alter dragon riding life as they know it.
In the third and most recent book, Onyx Storm, we follow Violet as she heads on a quest to learn Adarna’s (her dragon) origin and truth, or they will be faced with eternal doom. The novel ended with… a few unanswered questions and big cliffhangers, to say the least.

What Will the Fourth Empyrean Book Be About?
Hopefully, the fourth book in the Empyrean series will make sense of any confusion from the end of Onyx Storm.
While we won’t know too many details until the book hits shelves, Yarros has shared a few tidbits about the plot.
Notably, during the Onyx Storm press tour she said “Someone you love won’t make it in book four.”
The author also provided some clues as to who Xaden’s new venin brother could be, telling the audience at a seperate event: “I would pay attention to who’s missing at the end. I would pay attention to someone who feels like whatever they have given is not enough, which is always the case when you turn venin.”
What Is the Name of the Fourth Empyrean Book?
Yarros is yet to reveal the title of the fourth book in her Empyrean series.
