There is nothing we need more right now than a third Mamma Mia film. It’s been a while since we’ve had a bubbly, summery, all-out musical in theatres and we’d argue nothing could fill the void of it quite like another instalment of the ABBA-filled flick.
The past two movies, Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! were released in 2008 and 2018, respectively, so it’s ripe time for a follow-up.
Fans of the franchise might be in luck, too. While there hasn’t been any official word, unfortunately, several cast and crew members *have* spoken about the potential of a Mamma Mia 3.
Scroll on for all the news—including what living legend Christine Baranski (aka Tanya) has said—about the project so far.
Is Mamma Mia 3 Happening?
So, is Mamma Mia 3 actually happening? Well, at the time of writing, there has been no *official* confirmation.
However, Christine Baranski has dropped some pretty major news. She told The Hollywood Reporter that she had recently had dinner with Mammia Mia creator, Judy Kramer, and that a plan is in the works.
“I was in London with Judy Kramer at our favourite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia 3. She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Kramer to get everybody back together,” she told the outlet.
Christine also noted that location chats are underway. “We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast. I hope,” she added.
Judy herself spoke about the potential of a third film back in 2020. In an interview with the Daily Mail, she said, “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see … I know Universal would like me to do it.”
Sounds promising!
Mamma Mia 3 Cast
Should Mamma Mia 3 go ahead, it seems several of the series’ original cast members would be keen to jump on board.
When asked if she’d be up for a sequel, star Amanda Seyfried told the Radio Times, “Oh yeah! Beyond yes.”
Lily James, who played young Donna in the second film, added, “We laughed that it could be Mamma Mia! The DNA Test. You finally find out who the dad is.”
Here’s hoping all the OG cast members would be back, including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters and Dominic Cooper, as well as the sequel’s stars (hello, Cher).
Mamma Mia 3 Release Date
Given we don’t *actually* know whether or not it’s happening yet, there is no way to tell when a potential Mamma Mia 3 would be released. As soon as we know, we’ll be sure to update you. In the meantime, you’ll find us over here plugged into playlists of ABBA’s greatest hits.
