The Pogues are (almost) back!
After three successful (and somewhat chaotic) seasons, which were capped by an action-packed Season 3 finale, it was confirmed that Outer Banks had been renewed for a fourth run back in February 2023. More than a year on and OBX4 is closer than ever, with Netflix having confirmed its’ release date (this spring) and dropped the first trailer.
While we wait for the season to arrive, scroll on to watch the trailer and discover everything we know about Outer Banks Season 4 so far—and a recap of Season 3 because, let’s be real, you might need it.
Is There a Trailer for OBX4?
Yep! The trailer for Outer Banks Season 4 dropped on August 29.
The clip opens with John B. and the Pogues finally at peace before… chaos descends on the Outer Banks once again (because, ofc it does). Watch for yourself below.
What Happened In Outer Banks Season 3
First of all, if you need a refresher on WTF went down in OBX3, we don’t blame you—the season was a mammoth one. The finale alone was 79 minutes long, which is basically a feature-length film in and of itself.
To recap (PSA: spoilers ahead), the last instalment began with the Pogues stranded on a deserted island.
During the season, John B. discovers that his dad—who had been presumed dead for the whole show thus far—was alive and in the final episode, he and Sarah have to rescue him from antagonist Carlos Singh.
Meanwhile, Ward Cameron (who had also previously been presumed dead and—surprise!—later found to be alive) melted down the cross the Pogues had spent all of Season 2 trying to find.
Elsewhere, Kiara got sent to a Wilderness Camp-style boarding school, Pope and Cleo kissed (finally) and there were a bunch of car chases and explosions.
The final episode saw John B., Sarah and Big John stuck on a boat with Ward. Their vessel is intercepted by Singh, who shoots Big John (who survives this). John B. and Sarah escape and make their way to El Dorado, where they find the promised bag of gold. Once again, they are intercepted by Singh—but luckily, Big John sets off a bomb he just happened to have, allowing the Pogues time to get away.
The four make it to safety on a boat where they meet the other Pogues. But, given this is OBX, there is no happy moment to be had.
To cut a very long fight scene short: Ward tries to kill Big John, before Sarah talks him out of it and is attacked by one of Singh’s henchmen. Ward saves her, falling off the edge of a cliff in the process (whether or not he is actually, definitely gone for good remains to be seen—this is OBX, after all). Unfortunately, having lost a lot of blood, Big John also ends up succumbing to his injuries on the boat.
The episode concludes with an 18 month time jump, and we see the Pogues being celebrated for finding the gold and solving the mystery of el Dorado.
In the final moments of the episode, the group is approached by an older man, who asked for their help. He is seeking the log of a ship belonging to Edward Teach, aka Blackboard. The man tells them, “I would investigate it myself, but I’m too long in the tooth. I need partners, and you all were first on my list.”
Phew!
What Will Outer Banks Season 4 Be About?
Given the third season ended on a mysterious (and sort of eerie) note, we can expect that that is exactly where Outer Banks Season 4 will pick up.
Based on a teaser video released on August 15, it appears the the group are now the proud owners of a surf shop.
The plot of OBX4 has been kept on the DL, for the most part.
In April 2024, Chase Stokes, who plays John B. gave a few hints in an interview with People. “The writers talked about how there was a real want for a lot of the authenticity and the characters in season 1,” Chase said. “So I will say that they do a good job this season of that.”
He added that it would be a transitional period for John B. and Sarah, but that there would be the elements of their relationship that we know and love. Chase explained, “Being in the situation that John B. and Sarah are in, it really will force them to evaluate everything. Where they are, what their purpose is, what their intentions are, and what was the actual value of it? Was it worth it, in hindsight? If they could go back and change things, would they? Or do they feel okay with it?”
Outer Banks Season 4 Release Date
Netflix confirmed in August 2024 that Outer Banks Season 4 would be released in two parts.
Part one will drop on the streamer on October 10, with the follow up arriving on November 7.
