Who Is Ronnie Spector?

Beginning in 1960s, Ronnie Spector’s claim to fame was as one of the The Ronettes — who were considered to be the ultimate girl group of the time. Their classic pop hits included Grammy Award-winning “Walking in the Rain,” “Do I Love You,” and “Baby I Love You.”

Ronnie Spector was born Veronica Bennett, and she and her bandmates grew up in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan. In early 1967, after their tour with the Beatles ended and “I Can Hear Music” failed to make an impact, The Ronettes left for a tour in West Germany, after which they agreed to break up and go their separate ways.

Unfortunately, Ronnie went on to have an emotionally abusive marriage with record producer Phil Spector, but they later divorced.

The star lost her battle with cancer in 2022 at age 78.

Her impact on the music industry lives on as many believe she “defined an entire era in pop music and is the embodiment of the heart, soul, and passion of female rock and roll,” per her website.

Who Will Play Ronnie?

It was first reported that Zendaya was in talks to take on the role of The Ronettes’ icon in September 2020. After Ronnie passed away, Zendaya honoured the singer with some heartfelt words and a candid picture she took with Ronnie in 2018.

“This news just breaks my heart,” she captioned an Instagram post. “To speak about her as if she’s not with us feels strange as she is so incredibly full of life. There’s not a time I saw her without her iconic red lips and full teased hair, a true rockstar through and through.”

“Ronnie, being able to know you has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” she continued. “Thank you for sharing your life with me, I could listen to your stories for hours and hours. Thank you for your unmeasured talent, your unwavering love for performing, your strength, resilience and your grace. There is absolutely nothing that could dim the light you cast.”

“I admire you so much and am so grateful for the bond we share. You are a magical force of greatness and the world of music will never be the same. I wish everyone got to experience you the way I did.”

“We celebrate your beautiful life and give you all the flowers you so rightfully deserve. Rest in great power Ronnie,” Zendaya concluded. “I hope to make you proud.”

Now, Deadline has just shared the news that Zendaya will play the legendary songstress, and we couldn’t be more excited!
