WARNING: Mild spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 ahead

After six seasons, The Handmaid’s Tale came to a close this week with an explosive, twist-ridden series finale. Now, fans are are not only having to grapple with *that* ending, but also coming to terms with the fact that the series really is over for good.

By the recent season’s arrival, the show had already gone well beyond the story outlined in the original book by Margaret Atwood. Accordingly, the fate of its future was a touch unclear, with some fans wondering whether there could be more to explore within the once-dystopian society of Gilead.

Alas, this is not the case, with the show’s creators previously confirming that they had always planned to bring the story to a close in Season 6, and that it was something they had been building up to for some time. With that being said, the story isn’t truly over, exactly, as Hulu has already confirmed that a spin-off is in the works.

Will There Be The Handmaid's Tale Season 7?

Unfortunately, it seems that The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 really will be the end of the show, and a seventh instalment is highly unlikely.

When the Elisabeth Moss-fronted project was renewed for a sixth season back in 2022, creator, showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that it would be the series’ endgame.

“It’s been a very, very, very luxurious time that I’ve had to think about what happens at the end of this story and exactly how we’d like to get there as a company,” Miller told the outlet. “I’m very glad we’re being able to do it on our own terms because I know how lucky that makes us — all the actors and creative people who put their hearts and souls into it — to close up the play the way you want. Dropping the curtain the way you want is such a huge privilege.”

Will There Be a Spin-Off of The Handmaid's Tale?

While The Handmaid’s Tale Season 7 is a real pipe dream, the story isn’t quite over yet, exactly.

Hulu has confirmed that it is working on a sequel to the hit show, based on the book’s follow-up, titled The Testaments. The sequel is set in the same Gilead universe, several years after the end of the OG series, and due to feature a few familiar faces.

The Testaments tells the story  of three women: Aunt Lydia, as well as June’s two daughters Agnes and Daisy (AKA Hannah and Nicole).

The follow-up series was actually announced back in 2019, and has been quietly in production since.
