Calling all Top Gun fans, Tom Cruise *himself* has just confirmed that Top Gun 3 is definitely in the works, with fellow Top Gun: Maverick co-stars Glen Powell also chiming in on the exciting news of a third instalment. Does this mean another shirtless beach scene is on the horizon? We sure hope so.

Is Top Gun 3 *Actually* Happening?

Glen Powell, AKA Hangman, in Top Gun: Maverick, commented on the future of Top Gun way back in 2024, hinting at a potential production timeline on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Glen told the pod, “I mean, I have a date.” While he withheld all specifics, his cheeky comment hints that production for Top Gun 3 is imminent!
Most recently, Christopher McQuarrie, one of the franchise’s writers, has also shared that Top Gun 3 is full steam ahead.
“It’s already in the bag. I already know what it is. It wasn’t hard,” Chris also shared in a different Happy Sad Confused interview last week. “I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to walk from.”
“You walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?” and Ehren Kruger [Top Gun: Maverick co-writer] pitched something, and we had one conversation about it. The framework is there, so it’s not hard to crack [it].”
“It’s as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are,” he added. “It’s not the action, it’s not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it’s none of those things — it’s the emotion.”
And last but not least, the man himself, Tom Cruise, touched on the upcoming film during his Mission: Impossible promotional tour in Australia.
The Today Show host asked Tom, “Can I ask you about Top Gun 3? Is that something that’s on the horizon?” to which he replied, “Yes, we’re talking and thinking about many different stories, and analysing what we can do and what’s possible.
“It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick. But all these things we’re working on, we’re discussing them: Days of Thunder, Top Gun: Maverick. And there are many other films we’re actively working on.”
Who Is In The Top Gun 3 Cast?
Any details surround an official cast list are yet to be shared, however we can pretty safely assume that Tom Cruise will be reprising his integral role, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. And it looks like Glen Powell will be back in the air as well for the third instalment, once again playing Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin.
So, regardless of the remaining cast, it’s looks like we’ll be seeing Glen’s abs in on the big screen soon, woohoo!
When Will Top Gun 3 Come Out?
Now, we know what youre thinking. If the 36-year-wait between the first Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick is any indicator, then this third movie could take a while…
However, some reports are have revealed that we Top Gun 3 could be hitting screens in 2026! Per Film Stories, the third film is anticipated to arrive around mid 2026.
Where Will Top Gun 3 Be Available To Watch?
After hitting cinemas nationwide, we predict that Top Gun 3 will become available to stream on Apple TV+, along with the franchises earlier films: Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick.
