If 2025 has taught us anything so far, it’s that novel-to-television show adaptations are alive and well!
Joining Fourth Wing and Wuthering Heights, is E. Lockhart’s acclaimed novel, We Were Liars, which follows the journey of four friends on their summer escapades when a sudden and mysterious mishap changes their lives forever. In amongst the juicy drama and deception, the novel’s ever-twisting storyline is set to be a streaming hit.
Ahead of its June premiere (we’ve dropped the *exact* release date below), we’re making sure that you’re well-versed on all things We Were Liars before bingeing the book-based series. Scroll on for more.
Is We Were Liars Actually Happening?
Rest assured, We Were Liars is well and truly on its way! In fact, the series has already wrapped production, with the Season 1 premiere in the offing.
The TV adaptation was initially announced by Prime Video, with rights to the best-selling novel having been optioned by Julie Plec’s My So-Called Company and Universal Television back in 2022.
What Is We Were Liars About?
Written and executive produced by co-showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, the show is set on the Sinclair family’s privately owned island off the Massachusetts coastline, and the story delves into the complex lives of the seemingly golden Sinclair family.
The show hones in on their three daughters, who vacation every summer on Beechwood Island, with a particular emphasis on an incident that happened to Cadence at 15-years-old one summer. With her three friends, who claim the left-appointed title of “Liars”, we watch their secret unravel as Cadance is prompted to remember the full story a few years after a traumatic brain injury.

The Cast Of We Were Liars
Bringing the beloved characters to life, Prime has cast Emily Alyn Lind to play the eldest Sinclair granddaughter, Cadance, and Subham Maheshwari is pegged to take on the role of Gat, a native of New York City who struggle to find comfort amongst his privileged friends.
Playing Cadance’s cousins, who form the rest of their circle, Esther McGregor will portray Mirren, and Joseph Zada will play Johnny, the one who trouble never lurks far behind.
Mamie Gummer, Caitlin FitzGerald and Candice King will also play the remaining three lead roles — the Sinclair sisters.
