As fun as it usually is, Christmas Day is a notorious stress generator for a plethora of reasons—from making sure that the family feast is ample to the unavoidable annual interrogation about your (not-so-eventful) love life—having a list of last-resort trading stores is vital.
If, for whatever reason, you find yourself needing to venture out of the house for a jolly side quest, here’s a list of which go-to stores and establishments will remain open for Christmas Day day this year.
Will Supermarkets (Coles, Woolies, IGA, Aldi) Be Open On Christmas Day?
At this current time, unfortunately, it appears all three of Australia’s major supermarkets—Coles, Woolworths and Aldi—will be honouring the festive spirit and closing their doors for the whole of Christmas Day. However, all three retailers will be open if you need to grab some last-minute essentials on Christmas Eve, and shoppers will be able to do a re-stock shop on Boxing Day.
As for IGA, many of their stores are independently run, so holiday trading hours are really up to their discretion—we recommend checking out what your local has confirmed for Christmas Day 2024.

Are Bottle Shops Open on Christmas Day?
If you need a bit of liquid courage to get through this year’s Yuletide, you’ll want to get in early because most of Australia’s liquor stores will be shutting their doors on December 25.
As previously mentioned, Coles will be closed on Christmas Day, therefore its trading banners—Liquorland, First Choice Liquor Market and Vintage Cellars—will also be home for this holiday.
Joining these bottle-os in a day of carols and Christmas spirit, BWS stores across the country will be closed; excluding a select few of their drive-thru stores in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and South Australia. Check out the exceptions here.
But if you find yourself in desperate need of a booze boost, don’t fret, a couple of select Dan Murphys’ stores will be open on Christmas Day. Check out your local DMs’ trading hours here.

Is Maccas Open On Christmas Day?
Trust good ol’ McDonald’s to keep their doors open on the very merry day… a true Christmas miracle if you ask us!
But before you head out on Chrissy Day, we do recommend always double-checking your local store’s hours just in case of any last-minute adjustments to their holiday trading schedule.
As a last resort, Hungry Jacks will also be open, FYI.
Are Petrol Stations Open on Christmas Day?
Good News! There should be quite a few petrol stations trading this Christmas Day as most of them have unrestricted trading hours.
Are Banks open on Christmas Day?
Banks across Australia will definitely be closed on Christmas Day (sorry about those last-minute cash prezzies) but online banking will remain fully functional throughout the day for any simple money management that needs to be done. Between virtual assistance and Osko payments, any inquiries or transfers you need to make should be processed as they usually would—given the bank account you’re transferring to also offer Okso.
