If you’re struggling to find love, we’ve got good news—it’s not you, it’s where you live.
We get it, finding the one isn’t an easy task, but when you’re living in a suburb where everyone’s already partnered up, what can we tell you.. you’re not doing yourself any favours. But don’t worry, we’ve got all the info you need to turn your love life around. Australia is a nation full of vibrant cities, each with its own vibe—and some of their cities are better than others for meeting new people.
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has laid out the Aussie areas with the most significant gender splits. Essentially, if you’re a straight, single woman dating in a suburb where there are lots more women than men, finding a partner is going to be more difficult, and vice versa.
According the the ABS, the suburb with the largest percentage of young, never-married women is Byron Bay, followed by the glamorous inner city suburbs of Woollahra (Sydney) and Yarra (Melbourne).
The town with the most unmarried men? That would be Junee, NSW (don’t worry we had to pull up a map too). Junee is a regional town In NSW known for its agricultural industries. If you’re wondering what profession your prospective man could be in, the dominant industries of Junee include meat processing, correctional services and farming. Oh and, the historic regional town is also home to a chocolate factory—calling all our sweet tooth girlies.
This data has more recently been subjected to analysis by jeweller Shiels. To determine which are the best suburbs for singles, Shiels compared the most recent ABS marital data to local population figures. Here, they were able to see the areas with the highest-percentage of never-married residents between the ages of 20 and 34.
It seems a handful of the top 10 cities with unmarried young men are mining towns, whereas areas with the greatest proportions of never-married young women were closer to urban centres.
We should mention, this data may have some faults. It appears sexuality has not been included in the analysis, so we don’t know if our singles are LGBQA+, whether or not the singles who reside in wealthy suburbs are still living with their parents, and also the data only analysed those who had never been married—not those who are currently single.
Soooo… take it with a grain of salt.
Anyway, don’t worry about that for now. Just worry about the list of the top towns for young singles—which we’ve categorised by gender, and the percentage of never-married people. You’re welcome.
