Not Using Lube? This Might Make You Reconsider

A good lubricant can actually be the ultimate pleasure upgrade.

Let’s clear up a common misconception: lubricant isn’t just an afterthought or backup plan—it’s a total game changer. Whether you’re looking to enhance intimacy, boost pleasure or make things more comfortable, the right lubricant can elevate your solo or partnered play to new heights.

We spoke with Dr Raelia Lew, co-founder of intimate skincare brand Ellechemy, to get the inside scoop on why lubricant deserves a permanent spot on your bedside table.

What Is the Purpose of Lube?

One big lube myth is that lubricant is only for “issues” down there. This is not even close to the truth. Lubricant isn’t about fixing a problem—it’s about enhancing your experience.

“Their purpose is to enhance sensation, arousal, pleasure and orgasm,” explains Dr Lew. In other words, lubricant is a tool to make everything feel amazing—whether you’re flying solo or sharing the fun.

And it’s not just for women experiencing dryness issues (a common misconception). “Many of our products are actually designed with younger women in mind,” says Dr Lew. “For example, Protectility, our go-to basic, is great as a daily treatment after laser hair removal and can be amazing at any age.”

Whether you’re 25 or 55, there’s a lubricant tailored to your needs and mood.

Should You Use Lube For Masturbation?

YWho says lubricant is only for two? While it’s not strictly *necessary,* adding a silky serum to your solo sessions can turn up the heat and make every touch feel ten times better.

Dr Lew even recommends silicone lubricants for waterplay if you’re tempted by a self-love bath session. “Silicone is great for waterplay, like selflove in a warm bath,” she says.

Whether you’re indulging in a shower or cosying up in bed, lubricant can enhance those self-care moments.

Do You Always Need to Use Lube During Partnered Sex?

Again, while lube is not a required part of partnered sex, it is the ultimate team player. Whether it’s a quickie or an all-night marathon, it takes outercourse and intercourse to the next level, creating smoother, more satisfying connections.

“Ellechemy products are designed to improve pleasure, solo or with a partner. That is the true calling of a great lubricant,” says Dr Lew.

So the short answer is no, you don’t HAVE to use lube every single time you have sex, but you may find it ups the ante and makes things more pleasurable for both you and your partner.

Can You Use Spit As Lube?

If you don’t have any lube handy (or CBA reaching into the drawer of your bedside table to grab it), it can be tempting just to use what is readily available to you: saliva.

While technically, yes, you can use spit as a substitute for lube, it isn’t recommended. Spit dries quickly and isn’t particularly effective at reducing friction (which is, ya know, the main point of lube). This can lead to irritation—in both senses of the word.

Plus (no shocker given its actual purpose is to help break down food), spit contains enzymes may irritate the vagina and anus. STIs and bacteria can also be transferred to the genitals via spit, so do with that information what you will.

How to Tell Someone You Want or Need To Use Lube

Bringing lubricant into the bedroom doesn’t have to feel uncomfortable.

“Reframe the application of lubricant—it’s not to fix an issue. You are not sexually broken. It is a little luxury, a special treat, an indulgence,” says Dr Lew.

Whether you’re craving extra comfort, better sensations or a fresh way to connect, the right lubricant can transform your intimacy. Just a few silky drops, and you’re set for next-level pleasure.

How to Choose the Right Lube For You

There are different types of lube and finding the right one is like choosing wine—pair it with your plans.

  • Silicone based: Ideal for delicate or mature skin and perfect for waterplay or anal adventures, thanks to its long-lasting, silky feel.
  • Water based: Light, versatile and toy-safe. Great for hydration and daily use, especially after laser hair removal.
  • Oil based: Skip these for vaginal use. Dr Lew recommends sticking with pH-balanced options that respect your microbiome.
