The Building Blocks Of Brat Summer Style

It may be over in the Northern Hemisphere but Down Under, Brat Summer (well, spring) is just beginning.

Each year as July and August rolls around, Australians stuck at home are bombarded with Instagram feeds showcasing turquoise waters, sun-kissed skin, and striped beach umbrellas, sparking envy for those enjoying a European summer. But 2024 has felt particularly tough. While the below-average temperatures and persistent grey skies have certainly contributed, there was another glaring reason for the difficulty: the northern hemisphere aren’t only enjoying summer, they’re able to embrace Brat summer—white tank tops and all.

The Brat album by British pop superstar Charli XCX was released in June 2024, captivating the internet, not only by reviving the inner party girl we thought had faded since our university days but also becoming a symbol of fun and rebellion. Charli described the Brat persona as “a person who is a little messy, likes to party, maybe says some dumb things sometimes, feels herself, but also has breakdowns.” (me, yes, hi, hello!)

More than eight weeks since its release, and the internet has attempted to declare many times that the Brat era is officially over. But the marketing genius that is Charli XCX keeps feeding us with more. From a tweet declaring presidential candidate Kamala Harris as Brat, to an iconic bouquet of cigarettes at her A-list birthday party, and that collaboration with Billie Eilish on the ‘Guess’ remix.

As we eagerly await Charli XCX’s next move, the winter days in Australia are gradually warming up. Although a European summer might be off the cards, a Brat summer could still very much be a possibility. Below, you’ll find pieces from local and emerging labels that capture the Brat style, with options to embrace the look early as we transition into spring.

The White Tank Top

Charli XCX deemed the white tank the official uniform for Brat summer—the red wine stains that appeared in the 360 music video are optional. If you’re looking for something that offers full support for the no bra look that Charli so often rocks, opt for a sturdy tank from local label Assembly Label.

Too cold for a tank top? Take a cue from Charli’s iconic Ibiza boiler room set, where she wore a longer alternative. Consider the Nikita Top from Hansen and Gretel.

Black Sunglasses

No matter the day, season, or hour, if you’re Brat you’re wearing sunglasses. Le Specs offers a wide-eyed option similar to those Charli XCX has been spotted in. But after the ‘Guess’ remix, Billie Eilish is now (almost) as Brat as the queen herself. At Charli’s birthday party, Billie was in a stylish orange lense sunnie. Not dissimilar to the Mattie pair by Poppy Lissiman.

Micro Shorts

While it might seem outrageous to even think about exposing your winter legs and donning a pair of short shorts (hello razor my old friend), keep in mind that stockings are everywhere at the moment. Try sliding into a sleek pair and layer them with a tailored option from Sir.

For a more casual look, pair your white singlet with a striking design from Nagnata.

Knee High Boots

The one element of Brat summer style that isn’t exactly summery is the knee-high boot. If you’ve already invested in a pair this winter, you’re set. If not, check out the Crawford black croc style from Alias Mae, which is now on sale. For a more everyday look, we’re loving the fold-over boots from the emerging label Figarine.
