The naked dress may be something of a red carpet staple these days, but don’t expect to see any flesh-baring ensembles at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Just one day before the 2025 event was due to begin, the festival announced it had updated its dress code, with the new guidelines prohibiting nudity and “voluminous” gowns.

“For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted,” says the recently-updated charter. “The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”
A rep for the festival attempted to clarify the guidelines in a statement issued to The Hollywood Reporter. They told the outlet the charter was just updated to reflect “certain rules that have long been in effect” and the intent is “not to regulate attire per se but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet.”

A French festival banning nudity seems to us like a bar banning booze but hey, it is what it is. All we have to say is please join us in pouring one out for the poor stylists who will be re-planning their clients’ ‘fits for the festivities to come.
