Ahoy mateys! If you’ve ever dreamed of dressing like you grew up on the coastline, then buckle up your overalls and chuck on your wellies, because “fisherman-core” is about to hook you in.

Aye, it’s all about a touch of rugged, sea-worn charm, while holding on to a coastal granddaughter vibe. The best part about this style? No actual fishing required, unless you’re into that.

What Is the Fisherman Fashion Trend?

Initially characterised by deep-sea explorers and old men in yellow raincoats, fisherman fashion is now sailing straight into the trend cycle. It’s practical, it’s cozy, and it has that effortless, “I just stepped off a boat in the Hamptons” energy that we all secretly wish we had (especially after seeing almost every man on Hinge pose with a fish).

Whether you’re braving a coastal storm (or just a windy day at Bondi), this upcoming seasonal look is all about layering up in timeless, weatherproof pieces that somehow make you look cooler than you actually are.

What You Need to Nail the Aesthetic

Overalls

Nothing says “I can totally fillet a fish if I had to” more than a classic pair of baggy overalls. Whether it’s a dark wash, corduroy, or actual waterproof waders — shiver me timbers — these give off a practical but make it fashion vibe.

A Chunky Scarf

Fishermen know a thing or two about braving the angsty elements out far at sea, so, wrap yourself up in a chunky, comically large scarf or something equally oversized and ridiculously cozy. It’s like bringing a blanket to the pub to get fish ‘n’ chips — genius.

A Knit Sweater

Aye, behold the holy grail of this trend. A thick, cable-knit jumper (bonus points if it’s a Ralph Lauren classic) will keep you snug while making you look like you tell beguiling stories about adventures at sea. Wear it oversized and slightly pilled for that “I stole this from my retired sailor grandfather” effect.

Gumboots (With Wool Sock, ofc)

Rain or shine, a cute pair of wellies are the go-to footwear for this trend. Wear them with thick wool socks peeking out the top for that just got back from the docks touch. Also, they’re great for stomping through puddles and making an entrance.

Go for Hunter Gumboots, (think Kate Moss at Glastonbury Festival), but for the seaside vibe.

Stripes, Stripes, Stripes

A striped rugby jersey top is the easiest way to channel your inner fashionable fisherman. Pair it with relaxed trousers and you’ll look like you just hopped off a sailboat in the south of France.

Maritime Accessories

No, you don’t need to wear a full pirate costume (unless you want to, in which case, aye captain!), but a subtle nod to the sea using ocean motifs ties the look together. Fish-shaped necklaces, lobster earrings, or a vintage fisherman’s cap for example.

How to Style the Fisherman Trend

Unless you’re wanting to quit your full-time job to become a deckhand, (which tbh, sounds kinda cool), pair the oversized knits with sleek jeans or a tailored coat to keep things polished. If you’re going for full-on overalls, add a fitted turtleneck or statement scarf to keep the look intentional. And if all else fails, throw on a yellow raincoat, some gold fish charm hoops and call it a marshy seaside vibe.

The beauty of this trend lies in its versatility. Unlike fleeting micro-trends, fisherman-core is rooted in timeless staples, making it easy to adapt and reinterpret however you want. Whether inspired by nostalgia, a love for the outdoors, or simply the desire for comfort in colder months, this trend speaks to the enduring appeal of practical, well-made pieces. It’s a reflection of the growing appreciation for clothing that is both beautiful and built to last.

While you may not be hauling in nets or navigating stormy waters anytime soon, there’s something undeniably appealing about dressing like you could.
