On peer pressure...
“Growing up, I just wanted to dress like a boy, and no one really cares when you’re that young. But it’s different when you become a teenager. WhenI started Catholic high school,I was starting to suppress a lot of queer feelings, because I didn’t want to be bullied or ostracised. So when all the girls were having their Sweet Sixteen parties, I would just go into my sister’s room (she’s really feminine) and ask her to dress me. She would put me in some girlie skirt so that I could rock up to the parties and try to blend in. But I fucking hated it, it was literally just to conform, because I wasn’t able to be my true self. I haven’t worn a dress since I finished high school.”
On saying "I do," their way...
“Do you know how much people stress over weddings? [Chrishell and I] have already had two weddings; we want to do one every single year. We keep it really small, only invite people a few days out, go somewhere random, and just wear whatever we have with us. So for our first wedding in Vegas, I just found my black suit and tie, and Chrishell happened to have this awesome white latex dress. To be honest, we put no thought into it—which removed all the planning stress and made it all about love.”
On embracing androgyny...
“I 100 percent struggle to buy clothes, and I know a lot of my non-binary and trans friends do, too. I’m quite a small little human, so if I go to the men’s section, everything is just too big and long. All my jeans are cut off with scissors.I struggle to find suits that fit me, and I know it’s the same for my friends with curvier hips and chests that don’t necessarily want to emphasise their shape. Bikinis are always so feminine, so I often end up wearing sports clothes at the beach; like a Nike sports bra, or even my Calvins if I can’t find the right bottoms. There’s definitely a gap in the market to address that.”
On trolling the trolls...
“I fucking love the fashion on Selling Sunset, it’s so entertaining. One morning Chrishell woke me up early to say bye before she had to go film, and she looked like the most beautiful angel in this white dress and flowing long hair. Some people watch the show just for the ‘fits! Chrishell and I have such different styles, but we still share all our comfy clothes and joggers, and she’ll steal my baseball caps. We’ve done a couple of gender-bending Halloween costumes, like when we dressed up as each other, or when I dressed up as Troye Sivan in drag and Chrishell wore a men’s prosthetic torso from Amazon. The whole time I’m dressed up as her, she just can’t breathe from laughing. Watching me try to open the microwave with taped-on fake nails … we crack each other up. The fans love it, but the trolls were so outraged by that. Like, guys, it’s Halloween, it’s just a costume.”
