To anyone who believes in astrology, the moon is possibly the most powerful thing in existence. Given it pulls the ocean’s tides, it’s unsurprising it plays a major role in our birth charts, and can influence our emotions and moods.

Beyond its celestial influence, the moon is said to hold a magical quality when it comes to rituals, energy, and healing. So one may say that mastering the moon and its phases can be an incredibly potent tool when it comes to manifestation and magick

One way to get in on its power is by harnessing the power of Moon Water, an easy-to-make tool that can help set intention, manifest and cleanse.

What is Moon Water?

So what even is moon water? Not to point out the obvious, but it’s kinda in the name: it’s water that has been charged by the moon. So like, water with power.

You can create Moon water by simply leaving water outdoors to charge under the moonlight. The moon and water in general already hold an energetic connection, so your work is… basically done.

Because the Moon affects the ocean’s tides, there’s already an energetic connection between the element of water and the Moon.

But when you add intention (and maybe a crystal or two), that’s were the true magic lies. Here, you can create a tool that can be used for everything—including cleansing your home from all that negetive energy.

We know, it’s crazy to think a glass of tap water you left outside overnight can suddenly perform ritual cleanses, but it is worth a go—and here’s why;

Firstly, it comes down to the nature of the element of water. Energetically speaking, water is receptive, so it has the ability to hold the energy or intention of whatever it’s imbued with. And in the case of Moon water, the water acts as a psychic sponge, holding on to the energy the Moon is disseminating from the cosmos into our world. In this way, the water becomes a sort of talisman, channeling all the planetary energy of the Moon for use in future spells or rituals.

The vibration or energy of the Moon water you charge will be dependent on the sign the Moon is in ofc, as well as its phase—pro tip; Moon Water is most effective when created during the Full Moon.

When To Make Moon Water?

As we said, the Full Moon is the ideal time. Traditionally, this is the time Moon Water is usually charged because lunar energy is at its strongest, and we’re easily able to connect to our intuition.

But if you missed the Full Moon, don’t worry, you can also make Moon water during a Gibbous Moon, when the Moon is almost full.

The only time NOT to makeM Moon Water is during an eclipse. The eclipse energy overpowers lunar energy, so it’s not a good time to do this kind of work.

How to Make Moon Water

Ofc we couldn’t leave you without some instructions—that would not be very cool of us. So here’s the breakdown of what you’re gonna need for moon water.

Moon Water Ingredients

  • A jar or container (a mason jar will work best, but if you don’t have one, a clear glass jar, container, cup, or even Tupperware will do).
  • Water (from the tap, from a bottle, from a river… just make sure it’s safe to drink if that’s what your manifestation entails—the moon may be powerful, but it isn’t gonna filter your water girl).
  • A label to date your Moon water—note the sign and phase of the Moon.
  • Water-safe crystals, like rose quartz, clear quartz, or amethyst (optional).
  • Cleansing herbs, like mugwort (ruled by the Moon), lavender (for relaxation and healing), rosemary (for protection), or sweetgrass (for positive energy) (optional).
  • A lighter and bowl to burn the herbs (optional).
  • An intention to focus on, such as peace, love, or acceptance (optional).

Moon Water Instructions

  1. First, choose and prepare your container for your Moon water. You might begin by cleansing your jar or container with smoke from your herbs, sticking on your label, and adding crystals to your jar.
  2. Then add your water. You can use any source of water here, whether it’s from the tap, or from a nearby river. Just a note: Consider what you might want to use your Moon water for in the future, and choose a water that will fit. If you’re using it to water your garden, water from a local river will be fine; if you’re using it to remove your makeup, you’ll want something a little bit cleaner.
  3. Place the jar somewhere outside (0r if you don’t have access to the outdoors, on a windowsill) so it can absorb the Moon’s energy. Remember, even if you can’t see the Full Moon, the water will still charge.
  4. If you’d like, you can take a moment to meditate with the Moon water before you leave it to rest overnight. Hold your palms over the water and picture the lunar energy moving through the crown of your head, down your spine and arms, through your body, and out of your palms into the water. As you do so, focus on the intention you’re setting, then thank the universe for letting you connect with the cosmos.
  5. Finally, leave the water to charge overnight. In the morning, you’ll have Moon water!

How to Use Moon Water

While it’s never a bad idea to make Moon Water for a general purpose (like for tapping into lunar energy), using it to align with a specific intention is probably more worth your while.

When choosing your intention, it’s definitely beneficial to look up whatever sign the moon is in during the time when you’re planning on charging the water. We recommend you read about the energy of that zodiac sign before landing on an intention. So the Full Moon in Libra would be great for an intention about love—duh, because Libra is ruled by Venus (planet of love).

Once you’ve figured out what sort of intention aligns with the lunar phase you’re working with, get clear on said intention, writing it down in the present tense (since this tells the universe your intention is already yours—manifestation ladies).

After you’ve made your Moon Water, read your intention out loud and then hold your palms over the water. Charge your water by visualising silver lunar energy moving through the crown of your head, down your spine, through your body, down your arms, out your palms, and finally, into the water. Continue to visualise this energy pouring into the water until you feel the water is charged and glowing with your intention.

And there you have it, it’s now officially in the hands of the Moon (water), and manifested into the universe.
