It’s set to be a big year for reboots of old Sarah Michelle Gellar-fronted projects!

Not only has a new Cruel Intentions already been released, but there is a revival of I Know What You Did Last Summer due to drop in mid-2025 (more on that here), and — arguably, the cherry on top — a new chapter of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works, too.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, a follow-up to the beloved series is currently in development at Hulu. According to the outlet, writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman have described it as “the next chapter in the Buffyverse” and yep, Gellar is involved.

What Will the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Be About?

So what does “the next chapter of the Buffyverse” actually entail?

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the Buffy reboot will focus on a younger Slayer. Although the show’s original lore indicated that there could only be one Slayer at any given time, the show’s final season saw “the awakening” hundreds of potential Slayers.

This means that Gellar’s Buffy Summers can plausibly still exist in this new phase of the story. The outlet reports that the actress is involved in the project—however, Buffy is not set to be a central character. Variety reports that Buffy will instead be a recurring character, and that Gellar will also executive produce the series.

While Gellar had previously said she wasn’t interested in reprising her role, she changed her tune last December. In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show she said: “I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect.”

She added that after seeing the Sex and the City sequel, And Just Like That…, as well as Dexter spin-off Dexter: New Blood, she realised, “there are ways to do it.” Gellar concluded coyly, “[it] definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Who Is In the Cast?

Aside from reports that Gellar will be back as Buffy, only one cast member has been announced so far: 15-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who will play Gellar’s successor.

In a statement to Deadline, the show’s writers said: “We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”

Hulu also shared a sweet clip of the moment Gellar told Armstrong she’d got the part.

Buffy Reboot Release Date

Hulu is yet to confirm the series is even in development, so for now, we know very little about the show’s filming schedule or release date.

Accordingly, we might have to wait a while… which means there’s plenty of time to rewatch the original series!
