The news is out — Nintendo’s beloved 1989 video game, The Legend of Zelda, is *finally* being developed for the big screen!

Fans are naturally buzzing to find out who will portray the coveted character of Princess Zelda… and we’ve noticed Hunter Schafer‘s name has been tossed around an awful lot. But is there any truth to the rumours that she’ll be taking on the titular character?

Scroll on for a break down of all of the cast speculation around the forthcoming The Legend of Zelda movie.

So, Is Hunter Schafer Playing Princess Zelda in The Legend of Zelda?

Things are looking good for Hunter stans who are ready to see her whimsical side come on screen!

Best known for her stellar work in HBO’s Euphoria, the accomplished 26-year-old is a fan favourite in the running to take on the live-action reimagining of Princess Zelda.

Upon hearing about the game-to-movie adaptation in November 2023, fans eagerly began dream-casting the highly sought-after roles, and Hunter wasn’t shy about expressing her interest in joining the project.  In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the young actress leapt at the opportunity to chat about her love of the video game, noting her willingness to be involved in the film. “That would be so cool. I love the game, personally. I played it as a kid, and I still play it now. Who knows!”

Despite being a frontrunner for the role amongst the Zelda Universe fandom, a huge contributing factor to the final decisions is Hunters schedule. Hunter is reportedly in the midst of filming Euphoria Season 3, (there are also unconfirmed reports she’s being eyed to play Mystique in the highly anticipated X-Men reboot).

So, while Hunter would certainly nail the role, the casting of the titular character is yet to be confirmed. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see who will receive the honour of donning Princess Zelda’s iconic wardrobe.

Who Else Might Be Cast In The Legend of Zelda ?

The cast of The Legend of Zelda adaptation is, at this point, unconfirmed. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from throwing their fave actors’ hats in the ring and speculating who might take on the top roles.

Although it will be a bit of a change from his usual web-slinging around the NYC skyline, Spider-Man’s Tom Holland has been highly requested to take on the role of Link, the kingdom’s protector and bodyguard to Princess Zelda.

Unfortunately, these are also mere rumours and fan casts at this point.

Other popular picks for the role include Percy Jackson and the Olympians lead, Walker Scobell, however, he didn’t appear very interested in chasing the role. In an interview with Variety, he said: “I don’t know if I’d be interested in playing Link. If they came to me, I’d definitely consider it, one hundred percent,” he told “I have played Breath of the Wild. I haven’t played the new one, Tears of the Kingdom, but my dad loves Legend of Zelda. He played the games when he was younger.”

What Is The Legend of Zelda About?

Now, we don’t know the exact plot of this film, however, the long-standing 80’s video game has often followed Link’s journey to protect the Kingdom of Hyrule from the villain of the game, Ganondorf (who is often referred to a Ganon). Some of his quests include rescuing  Princess Zelda, battling monsters, solving riddles and uncovering ancient lore.

When and Where Will The Legend of Zelda Premiere?

The Legend of Zelda is set to start production in November 2026, in New Zealand and — via the Nintendo Today app — the Sony Pictures movie is set to hit cinemas on March 26, 2027!
